چکیده

While normal distributions and related current quantitative methods are still relevant for some organizational research, the growing ubiquity of power laws signifies that Pareto rank/frequency distributions, fractals, and underlying scale-free theories are increasingly pervasive and valid characterizations of organizational dynamics. Where true, researchers ignoring power law effects risk drawing false conclusions and promulgating useless advice to practitioners. This because what is important to most managers are the extremes they face, not averages. We show that power laws are pervasive in the organizational world and present fifteen scale-free theories that apply to organizations. Next, we discuss research implications embedded in Pareto rank/frequency distributions and draw statistical and methodological implications.

Managing in a Pareto world calls for new thinking

Research findings showing the ubiquity of Pareto and ‘power-law’ distributions in the social and organisational worlds underlie increasing calls for complexity-driven ideas to be applied more frequently to organisational and management research. Power laws indicate well-formed Pareto distributions. Given that the world of business is, then, quite likely Paretian rather than Gaussian, phenomena ...

Perspective of MAS in Power System via a Fuzzy Framework

Multi agent systems (MAS) are popularly used in practice, however; a few studies have looked at MAS capabilities from the power engineering perspective. This paper presents the results of an investigation concerning the compatibility of MAS capabilities in different power engineering categories. Five MAS capabilities and seven power system categories are established. A framework for applying MA...

Beyond Gaussian Averages: Redirecting Management Research Toward Extreme Events and Power Laws

Practicing managers live in a world of ‘extremes’ but management research is based on Gaussian statistics that rule out those extremes. On occasion, deviation amplifying mutual causal processes among interdependent data points cause extreme events characterized by power laws. They seem ubiquitous; we list 80 kinds of them – half each among natural and social phenomena. We draw a ‘line in the sa...
